RECAP: FIRST SATURDAYS AT THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM

(Photo: Party Goers at the Brooklyn Museum)

Brooklyn offers no shortage of culturally fabulous experiences, and for my fellow Brooklynites especially, the Brooklyn Museum (200 Eastern Pkwy) is a must see. But for a fabulously free event (which I am a sucker for) the museum offers First Saturdays sponsored by Target.

Now, there were certainly plenty of things to do around the city this past Fourth of July weekend. But instead of firing up the grill for an evening bbq, hundred of attendees partied at the Brooklyn Museum Saturday night from 5pm-11pm.

Okay, okay. I know what you're thinking…spend a Saturday night at the Brooklyn Museum? As a skeptical partygoer, I went on July 5th half expecting to be bored out of my mind. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The museum offered free African inspired art programs (although I am creatively challenged, it was still fun!), access to the museum's galleries, films, and an African dance party.

Although the dance party is typically held in the parking lot, on this particular day it was inside. At first I was thankful for this since it was humid (not a good look for a girl's hair)….that is until I realized the room it was in had no AC! DJ Stone on the ones and twos spun African dance beats as partygoers sweat out their fresh Fourth of July dos. And if you were expecting a free beverage to chill out, you were clearly mistaken.

Although the overall event was free, there was a small fee for food and beverage. Personally, I thought the Africa-like temperatures in the party warranted at least free tap water…
So for a free, cultural, chill (although not on this night) Saturday night…the Brooklyn Museum's

First Saturdays does not disappoint. Even better, it's over at 11:00pm which means plenty of time to head to the next fab event!
