Retro Recap | Katra, ThreeKings, Zona Rosa, DCFab! Birthday

Ok so I'm a week late but no love lost....right?!? So last weekend, DCFab! Girl headed up to the Big Apple to define her "Jordan" moment...in other words she turned 23! We planned to hit up a couple joints, so here is a mini recap of what we witnessed:

Katra

We heard that Katra (Alphabet City, LES) was free on Fridays so we headed out there to meet up with some old college friends. We walked in and I already knew that it would be suspect.

On the bottom floor, they played salsa music and the top floor was supposedly for the "urban" crowd. Ummm for the first five minutes, I felt like I was the audience to a vogueing video on YouTube. The dudes in there were gettin' it! This little dude kept trying to dance with me because he thought I was playing around. Clearly I was looking at him like, "I'm not your homegirl, step back" LOL.

The music was wacccckkk for the first 90 minutes and we didn't even get there till 2 am (womp womp). The DJ played MC Hammer, Cypress Hill, Naughty By Nature, and even played some techno. In other words, these are great artists but he was stuck in a 1995 time zone, and after a while it gets old. Before we left, he played a couple Lil Wayne & T-Pain songs, but I was still ready to go. The important part is that we caught up with old friends, and my line sistas and I got a chance to hang out. I'm still madd that they tried to charge my $4 for cranberry juice, so I doubt I will go back there again on Friday unless its a special event.

Zona Rosa

First off, lemme thank our guys at ThreeKings for getting all of us into their party at Zona Rosa last Saturday. Some promoters act stank, but they always hold us down, so thanks again! :)

And even though I love ThreeKings, and usually have a great time at their parties, unfortunately, Zona Rosa wasn't the best of the best. Apparently there was a private party upstairs, so the majority of the crowd was there for that.

DJ Jon Quick was on the 1's & 2's, and his music was pretty good. I was tired, so I took a seat to watch the crowd and of course DCFab! Girl & company had a great time (with a lil help from some Goose lol).

I'm not feeling Zona Rosa for a spot to have a party because downstairs reminded me of a Jamaican bashment party with the wrong crowd. The Canal Room is definitely a better fit, but overall, I gave the party a B- (minus for the fact that the crowd only got it poppin' in waves)

Back To School Ball at Star Lounge!

8.28 | Afterwork Thursday @ Level V

Tonight (8.28.08), my peoples at B. Ivy & ThreeKings are inviting "NY's finest" to come out to Level V (675 Hudson St.) for two things:

1. To celebrate the summer coming to an end...although I'm not sure if thats a good thing of not :)

2. And of course to hear Barack Obama's historic speech at 10pm

RECAP: THREE KINGS "ANTICIPATION" AT STRATA

I have to admit, I really didn't feel like going out last night. I wasn't feeling to well and would have much rather preferred to stay in and watch the new HBO movie, "Recount." Although I was tired I still dragged myself out of bed because there were so many parties going on for Memorial Day I knew I'd be missing out on a good time if I stayed in.

My choice party of the night was ThreeKings "Anticipation" at Strata (915 Broadway) (I didn't even make back up plans because I knew it was going to blast)...or so I thought.


Venue: I'm not the biggest fan of Strata, but I usually have an ok time when I go there. I also know how hard it is for promoters to have a YBP party at any venue in NYC. I hear it can be quite the impossible task.


The Line: As usual the line was practically around the corner like most ThreeKing parties. They had two lines, one for models and one for the "regular people." So my girl and I hopped on the long line, since we clearly weren't models. We were only in line for 10 minutes, it was very organized and the line went fast. Good job folk at the front door!

Cover: I hear folks paid between $10-$25 to get in the club. I felt sorry for one dude when he handed the lady $20 and she told him no it was $25. They went back and forth because the lady at the door told him it was $20 and as soon as he stepped foot inside they told him another price. SMH. Him and his crew left and I would have too! The covers for dudes are really getting crazy now and days.

Crowd: I was pleasantly surprised to see so many new faces at a Three Kings party (I guess the regulars were on vacation). I usually can't get in the door without running into at least 10 people I know. However, as I looked around the room I noticed that there were nothing but females. The male to female ratio was insane! Promoters you have to do something about promoting to men, whether it's lowering the prices or another strategy! There were just way to many females in there.

Music: D.J. Velocity was on the 1's and 2's and people we're not dancing, instead they were doing a two step because the music was ehhhh. Most D.J.'s play the old school music at the end of the party, but for some reason he was playing it in the beginning when people hadn't even had half their drink yet (You know when you're tipsy at the end of the night dancing to the old school beats, well that's how it's supposed to be). To all promoters and D.J.'s please listen to the wise advice of BostonFab:

"The role of the DJ is to get the party hype; to get people dancing. It is not your job to identify how many single ladies are in the room, it is not your job to find out who has money in their pocket; you are not there to try out your new music (music you created on your PC), or practice your scratching skills, nor is it your purpose to play only music YOU like and ignore the rest of us who actually paid to be there. Your role, once again is to get us dancing. Don't put it on the bartenders to get us drunk enough to get with your vibe. "

SIGH.

He also played way to many "chick" songs. I watched dudes throw their hands up in frustration as he continued to blast Beyonce, Lil' Mo, etc. I felt bad for the guys in the room. My girl and I gave up after a couple hours when the music didn't change.My sources tell me around 1:45 a.m. -2:00 a.m. the party and music got much better.


The good news is that "Recount" was on again when I came home (lol)!

I give this party a Fab 3 (but I really blame it on the D.J. and lack of men) Was there a game on or something? Let me know!:)

Recap: Three Kings Party Saturday Night at The Canal Room

So, half of TheFabEmpire crew came to visit your girl in the city this weekend and we had a great time! We hit up lots of "touristy" spots and had a blast at the Three Kings Party on Saturday night. Check out the scoop on what went down:

1. I have to admit I was slightly disappointed with the choice of The Canal Room( 285 W. Broadway) as the venue. One of the best things about living in NYC is that there are so many lounges, clubs, etc....I wanted a new spot!

2. The woman at the door was extremely rude and lied to people about how much it cost to get in. I watched her tell three different groups of people different prices ($10, $15, and $20) Not fab!

3. However, once inside I was in good spirits. The drinks were strong but expensive of course...at least all the handsome men in the building made up for it!

4. Another thing about Three Kings' parties is that it's really a reunion for the young black professionals. I wasn't inside the venue for one second, when I saw three people I knew. Not to mention they shouted out Howard University all night long...boo.

Overall, I give this party an A- and if you've never checked out a Three Kings' party I recommend that you do!

MLK WEEKEND | Element, Strata, Providence, and 49 GROVE

DJ Envy and others present Black Renaissance at Element (225 E. HOUSTON & ESSEX) this Saturday (1.19.08). There will be an open bar from 11-12 a.m. (whoo-hoo!!!) and ladies are free before 12 a.m. if you RSVP. Let's see the hottest DJ in NYC, an open bar, and ladies are free??? As you ALL know Strata is always packed and promises to be a good time. Go out and have fun since there's no work on Monday!!! Kudo's to Strata for the HOT flier.

---The KINGS are back! Three Kings will be hosting their second annual "All Black Affair" Providence (311 W 57th St.) They are asking everyone to come dressed in their sexiest all black attire. These gentlemen know how to pack a party out...let's just hope the crowd is better than it was during their New Years party!!

New Years Recap | Plumm, Riverview, and Dirty Disco

Michael Strahan made it rain on New Years Eve at Plumm (246 W 14th St). NFL and NBA players were in the building. Ladies had on their finest winter freakums and the fellas were on point as well. Plumm's spacious venue allowed party goers to mix, mingle, and have a great time.

The only complaint was that the bartenders were not moving fast enough. But then again are they ever when it's open bar?

The Three Kings did it again by having a sold out crowd of young African American professionals on New Years Eve. The event was held at 101 Riverview and included an open bar all night. However due to the crowds atrocious behavior they shut the party down. Our sources said,

"The bar remained stocked throughout the night however the venue was crappy. I felt like I was at a high school prom in the hood. People had spilled drinks all over the floor and there were no cleaning people to mop [it] up...I went to the bathroom and found a young “lady” sitting on a bare toilet seat [with] panties around ankles, surrounded by vomit…no friends to look after her…yeah, everyone is happy it's ’08 but have some self-respect."

WOW...is all I can say! Definitely not a good look, but there's no one to blame besides the crowd. Better luck next time Three Kings!

TomKitten Productions hosted their New Years Eve party at the popular Manhattan club, Dirty Disco (248 W 14th St). There were absolutely no complaints about the cheapest event in town. The open bar was top shelf and stocked, the hors d'oeuvres were delicious, and the crowd was mixed with people from all over the U.S.

Congrats for doing your thing TomKitten and Dirty Disco!!
