My mouth dropped when I heard Jay-Z recorded a diss record for NBA player Deshawn Stevenson just two days after the Sean Bell verdict. I understand Lebron James is his boy, but there are much bigger problems in the world right now than some beef between two very well off basketball players.
Jay-Z is one of the biggest artist that music has ever known and has the ability to speak to the world whenever he pleases, so I cannot fathom why instead of addressing the Sean Bell verdict and giving his thoughts, he instead chose to make a diss record.
It just makes no sense to me!
I'm in no way saying that it is Jay's or any other artist's responsibility to come in and make a record every time something happens in our community, but it is their responsibility to make better choices.
The people of New York (Jay's people as he claims) are really hurting right now due to this verdict. Our community needs words of wisdom, words that make you think, words that give you comfort in this tragic situation; what we don't need is another diss record that means absolutely nothing!
To all the hip hop artist out there who speak to the world on a daily basis; wake up!
